A New Choir for a New Year
St. James’s Church is the starting-point for the fabulous Poole Community Passion Play, which will run for three nights in April 2010 (8th, 9th & 10th). Hundreds of people – actors, singers, bell-ringers, and not forgetting the audience – will experience the first part of the play in St. James’s, with Angel Choirs, Trumpets on the Tower, and a light-show. Then the play will lead us through the streets of Old Poole, with more opportunities for music at every corner. Dozens of Poole organisations will be involved in the show, and we expect it to gain national press coverage.
So we’re starting our Children’s Choir in January. In addition to taking a leading role in the Community Play, we’ll be up for anything that’s going – a singsong in the Museum, perhaps; a spot in a concert at Lighthouse; maybe even a trip to our twin town Cherbourg, once we’re up and running.
Your child will have the opportunity to learn to sing, to read music, to gain confidence by performing in public, all absolutely free of charge. New friends, new experiences, new skills. The Choir will be trained by our Director of Music, David Owen Norris. David is an international concert pianist, and a broadcaster, as well as Professor at Southampton University. He frequently works with children: 600 of them sang, danced and played his piece A New Creation in Winchester Cathedral last year. His Bach Day in a York Comprehensive was broadcast on the BBC, and his special Chopin piano lessons were posted on the BBC website.
Practices will be at St. James’s Church on Sunday afternoons. Girls’ practice starts at 4pm. Boys arrive for Tea with the girls at 4.45. Girls leave at 5, and the boys practice their music till 5.45.
Today’s busy lives make it hard to fit in another weekly activity. We will have to require quite a degree of commitment from our singers and their parents, but we do recognise that occasionally a practice will have to be skipped. Entrance to the Choir will be by informal audition. You can ring Professor Norris on 07957 322 091 to arrange a time to meet him, or you can just turn up any Sunday afternoon. The first practice is on Sunday 10th January. Girls 4pm-5pm, boys 4.45-5.45. Drinks and biscuits provided free.
Let’s start a new Poole Tradition!
Start to Sing
If you’ve always liked the idea of singing in a church choir, but aren’t sure you want to jump in at the deep end, this is for you. We’ll work on vocal production, singing in parts and all the special aspects of the great heritage of church music.
*Practices for the Music Group (instruments and voices, for the Morning Services) and the Choir (singers, for the Evening Services) are held in the Church.
We are always happy to welcome new members, please contact David on info@ davidowennorris.com or by calling him on 01264 355 409. |
